en·tre·pre·neur - / äntrəprəˈno͝o(ə)r/ - noun
a person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do so.
Opening a business anywhere can be a gamble, especially in a small town like Bullhead City. Not only is there financial risk at stake but also the possibility of failure. Many factors fall into that category like support system, team stability, location, marketing etc. We’ve seen many businesses open and fail within their first year in this area. With the risks of having one location, people wouldn’t dare to open or take over a second location. But at times, when opportunities are presented to you, you have to roll the dice.
Angel Elizalde is the 27 year old shop owner of Angel's House of Fades and (new) owner of Scissorhands Barbershop in Bullhead City.
Originally from Riverside, California - Angel has now been a Bullhead native off & on for over a decade. He now calls this area home, after pursuing his dreams of becoming a successful business owner.
Angel’s interest in hair-styling began as a pre-teen when he saw his older brother attend cosmetology school. His brother would bring his newly learned techniques home to practice on both Angel and his younger brother.
“I’ve always looked up to my big brother, so when I saw him doing cosmetology, I wanted to do it too.”
At the age of 13, Angel began to dedicate his free time to learning the art of hair-styling. His interest grew as he went into high school, where he was more than busy fixing up his classmates after school. After graduating from Mohave High School in 2010, he was left with very little direction. He stayed in town and continued cutting hair from home as a full time job. Even with all the success he was having and the heavy clientele he had built for himself, he decided to move back to Riverside where he’d be closer to family and could give himself the opportunity to live a different life.
Relocating to Riverside, Angel had plans to pursue barbering/cosmetology but soon realized he had more than enough on his plate. He found himself working full time inside of a frozen food warehouse. Due to under staffing, he was working six 12 hour shifts a week leaving very little time to chase after his dreams. Three years later - with no time to follow through with his dream, he knew it was time to let go and come home to regroup.
Moving back to Bullhead at the age of 24 was the fresh start he needed. He now knew his true calling in life, cosmetology school. Angel enrolled at Charles of Italy Beauty College and Massage Therapy School, because like those before him, there wasn’t a barber school or financial aid anywhere else. While the aid did help for all schooling supplies, he still had to pick up side jobs and paint houses when not in school to be able to pay for everything else he needed as he was living by himself.
After becoming a licensed cosmetologist, Angel knew he didn’t want to work for anyone. He wanted to be his own boss and decided to invest in opening his own business locally.
“The shop environments in town weren’t what I was looking for, I knew I had to create that environment. Something different, something new, something exciting, a shop for the younger generation but also older cats - I have my music playlist for everyone.”
Angel started looking for a location and soon found one via the Bullhead Exchange on Facebook. His family was very supportive in looking to seal a deal with the previous owners. He was able to work out a deal with the owners and landlord to do 8 months free of charge to renovate & remodel the shop to its new look. The unexpected expenses, hard work & late nights he and his family put into the shop finally paid off as he had his grand opening on November 4th of 2017.
A year later - after much success with House of Fades, Angel was presented an opportunity to take over an existing shop, Scissorhands, on Highway 95 in Bullhead City. The dream shop he always imagined was finally within his reach, so he decided to invest in his future and take on this new adventure.
“I’m not really afraid of taking on new business ventures. If I’m going to try it, I better try it now. I know later on these opportunities won’t come around. If I fail, it’s all good. It’s better to have tried, than never taken the chance.”
His plan now is to relocate House of Fades to his newly purchased location (Scissorhands) and transform his current location into a beauty bar for the ladies. This new endeavor will take some time to develop, but he is ready to put in the needed effort to make it possible. With two full time locations he will be looking to help out those in his community. Hiring newly licensed graduates, experienced barbers & modern hairstylist to give them a platform to take their skills to the next level.
Angel is also looking to voice his opinion for the younger generation of business owners with the local Chamber of Commerce. He is interested in attending meetings and networking with people who aren’t familiar with the hard work that this generation is bringing into the Tri-State area. This is a man working to improve his professions community and the cities community as a whole.
