November 1st and 2nd are known as Dia De Los Muertos / Day of The Dead. A Mexican tradition celebrated across the world as a day of remembrance for family, friends and ancestors who’ve passed away. The celebration includes decorating grave sites with flowers, candles and food as well as building “ofrendas” or altars to encapsulate all members they are celebrating / remembering.
As of October 30th, 2020 - The U.S. has renamed November 1st as the National Day of Remembrance for “Americans Killed by Illegal Aliens”. Some people have found this to be very insulting to tradition.
BUT, it did not stop locals from continuing with this tradition.
Las Vegas organizers put together an event to celebrate those lives lost. The tables and ofrendas included photos of family members, friends and those who are still seeking justice.
Vanessa Guillen : 20 year old U.S. Army soldier murdered in Fort Hood.
Lesly Palacio : 22 year old, Vegas resident who was murdered in September.
Jorge Gomez, Keith Childress Jr. : 25 & 23 year olds who were killed by LVMPD.
Many more were remembered by friends and family.
Event organizers included : Munguwakike & Soldadera, Food Not Bombs LV, More Than A Hashtag, Fifth Sun Project, Las Vegas Animal Save .
